Visit to Kamuli October 23

In October 2023 Mhairi and team visited St Theresa’s primary school whilst they were in Kamuli.

The team were pleased to report that the school and farm continue to go from strength to strength.

There is a new headmistress Edith Namukose, who is an enthusiastic supporter of the farm and school lunch project. She met with Mhairi to update on progress

There are now 1000 pupils at St Theresa’s primary school. The girls continue to excel academically and now compete at national level in netball. Every pupil receives a nutritious daily school lunch.

SLK continues to send a termly payment to support the farm and to provide supplementary funds for lunches. The payment has been reduced to £2500 per term and will continue to gradually reduce over the next 3 years.

The farm now has pigs, cows and chickens. Profit from the sale of piglets has been invested in buying 250 broiler chickens. The cows are doing well, although continue to graze mainly at the school rather than the farm. Several are in calf again and all continue to provide milk. There is now regular milk and eggs to provide school lunches for the girls.

The fields have been sowed with Maize, soya beans and potatoes all of which promise a good crop this year. Unfortunately the bean crop was not as abundant as recent years owing to inclement weather.

The farm contributes to approximately 25% of the cost and produce for all school lunches. The aim is to increase this to 30% by the end of 2024. This would provide for all pupils who are unable to pay for their own lunch.
